The Soldier of the Battle of Thrift “ El Soldado de la Battala del Ahorramiento”

The Soldier of the Battle of Thrift
“ El Soldado de la Battala del Ahorramiento”

The economic system and the US blockade has made Cuba a sui-generis case. Due to this there is scarcity of resources .However this has been a blessing in disguise for the Cubans to save each and each resource. The Cuban societal system puts great value on thriftiness and each person who strives for this is called as the Soldier of the Battle of Thrift .

It is said that necessity is the mother of invention .Cuban society provides ample proof for this adage. Let me take the liberty to quote a few adventures of these soldiers

1) It is highly objectionable to put on the lights before its 100% dark. The Cuban government has replaced all the incandescent bulbs in the country with advanced energy saving bulbs. All old refrigerators are being replaced by new and energy efficient refrigerators.
2) It is bounden duty of the official in-charge to switch off the AC and lights of the room immediately after the meeting is over and the guests are ready to leave.
3) When it comes to use and reuse of the scarce commodity of polythene bags, the Cubans are par excellence. They clean, wash and reuse these bags and in turn keep the environment clean of this menace.
4) The Cubans are prompt enough to put their vehicles in neutral position on dipping slopes to save the highly costly black gold.

These things though followed by the Cubans for having no option have helped them to inculcate the quality of utilizing the scare resources of mother earth to the maximum extent possible.
